Xemnu of the Magic Planet

Recently a member of the Operation Clambake Forums posted an interested thread.

“I had found a book at the library for my son on The Hulk. One of the entries was Xemnu. I am trying to find out he was created. I looks like sometime in the early 70’s.

This is incredibly interesting and on further inspection through google, various members have found some information that could expose OT3 as a mere comic book fantasy.

“I had an issue of THE DEFENDERS (Dr. Strange, the Sub-Mariner, and the Hulk) from 1971 where Xemnu returns to Earth and got a job as a mascot on a kids TV show. His plan was to hypnotize the planet’s children so he could take them back to his home world.”

Of course for those unfamilar with OT3, the basis of the story is as follows:

• Ruler of a galactic confederacy, Xenu deemed the galaxy overpopulated
• Xenu loaded millions into space planes (which looked like DC8’s only with rocket engines)
• Xenu froze the aliens
• Xenu dumped the aliens into volcanoes on Teegeeak (Earth) – most of which did not exist 75 million years ago
• Xenu used H-Bombs to kill the aliens
• The alien souls escaped
• Xenu caught them in nets in the sky
• Souls are brainwashed in 3D theatres
• Souls wander earth until dawn of man
  

Now, taking this into account we can look at the information about this Marvel character. Graciously, user don_carlo provides most of the evidence.

XEMNU QUOTE # 1: …an old marvel villain, Xemnu The Titan (who was originally called the Hulk when he first appeared in a 1950’s horror comic.)
Xemnu was your typical Alien warlord who got trapped in a dimensional prison before being freed by earthlings, and like all evil overlords, after his intial defeat, he fled to his homeworld to assemble a battle fleet to crush the hairless monkeys.
What he did not expect, however, was that while he was locked away, his entire species had nuked themselves to extinction, and ths his motives changed from “Conquer all I survey” to “repopulate my species”. END QUOTE from

Ok, so Xemnu was an alien overlord who was trapped in a dimensional prison. According to OT3, Xenu was imprisoned in a mountain fortress – where he still resides to this day.

Xemnu’s entire species had nuked themselves to extinction – L.Ron said that Xenu nuked the overpopulated species of his galaxy.

The Xemnu of the magic planet series began in the early 60’s, while OT3 was actually written months after several of these comics were republished.

As for the other elements of OT3, don_carlo writes:

The “volcano” part of the story, according to this website was influenced by Hubbard’s stay in Las Palmas, Canary Islands.

So that covers the volcano aspect of OT3, as well as his overall state at the time of dreaming up this story. As for the DC8, funnily enough in the late 60’s it was the new jet of the era.

The source of the DC-8 reference in OT3: LRH must have flown in a DC-8 numerous times. There were updated versions of the DC-8 during the 1960’s, and it was THE big new jet of the era.

So that covers the character of Xenu, the volcanoes and space travel but what about the H-Bombs? Surely L.Ron didn’t create this story out of everything obviously around him at the time?

“Where did the H-bomb reference come from? In July 1967 China exploded its first H-bomb. Even though I was just a kid, I remember it being all over the newspapers and people talking about it. I should have said earlier that the Canary Islands (where Las Palmas is located) have volcanoes as a major tourist attraction. So maybe we don’t have to find a comic book with volcanoes, H-bombs, and DC-8’s. L.Ron was influenced by all these in real life in 1967.”

Don_Carlo continues, fishing out more evidence of the obvious events surrounding the creation of OT3:

Overpopulation – QUOTE:
In an article published in New Scientist in December 1967… Ehrlich asserted that the battle to feed humanity is over and predicted that somewhere between 1970 and 1985 the world will undergo vast famines.
…Ehrlich distilled …his lectures and articles on the population explosion in The Population Bomb, 1968.

Amongst other pieces of information regarding the source of possible “brainwashing” and “implants”, Don_Carlo posts:

So there you have it, OT3 in a nutshell. With this evidence it seems that no stone has been left unturned and everything points to a completely fictional story which has easily been pieced together from the life of L.Ron Hubbard.
